In the view on this black transfer dessert plate, a father and son approach a classical temple-like structure flanked by towering trees. The temple and scenery suggest the park-like setting advocated for nineteenth century cemeteries. The view originates from architect Robert Mills' winning entry for the Richmond, Virginia's "Monumental Church." The Jacksons fiinish this view with the border of prominent rose clusters used throughout their "American Scenery" series.

Monumental Church was built to accompany a memorial commemorating the victims of a massive theatre fire that had occurred previously on the site. Mills's austere and solemn structure effectively borrows elements from ancient funereal architecture. Thankfully the church still stands (except for the spire which was never built) in Richmond's architecturally rich downtown.

Ellouise Baker Larsen lists this view as "At Richmond, Virginia." Larsen goes on to identify the engraving as "Episcopal Church at Richmond, Virginia," taken from the Robert Mills engraving by William Goodacre, Jr. and published in London in 1831 (American Historical Views On Staffordshire China).
