While the maker is un-identified, the "Russian Palace" pattern is well recognized by early blue transfer pearlware collectors. The light weight potting typical of 1820’s patterns is combined with a border of dense convolvulus and roses to support the Russian tableau.

In the foreground, exotic deer share our viewpoint from a narrow riverbank. An ornate onion domed palace and a huge cascading willow dominate the opposite shore. To our right, a bridge seems to emerge from under the tree, where we note a Cossack and his wife staring at us as we pause to look at the fishermen manning their boat in the stream.

In its day, the "Russian Palace" pattern must have enchanted the public with its romantic view of exotic faraway Russia. While little has been discovered regarding the maker of this medium blue pattern, the combination of its distinctive border, onion dome palace and prominent willow tree makes "Russian Palace" a favorite among collectors today.
