Our potter has approached the design of this buff molded stoneware jug from an architectural perspective.  The significant decorative element here is the use of a paneled body. Each panel is decorated with a vertical, stylized honeysuckle device terminating with a scallop profile at the rim.  Overall, the composition achieves its effect through repetition, an effect more restrained than later molded stoneware jugs. 

An article in the Northern Ceramic Society Journal, "The Swinglehirst Jug, C. 1828," includes a group of variants on this jug design -- including this molded jug, as well as earlier sprig applied examples. The author, Benjamin Allen has compiled an extensive list identifying the pad marks found on British pottery, enabling him to link the design to one of the partnerships that evolved in 1833 into Machin & Potts. Our jug may represent a carry-over of an earlier design into the period dominated by molded rather than sprigged decorating technique.
