To illustrate two proverbs on the value of time, this simple mug features an enameled transfer printed scene depicting a situation in which time is indeed of the essence. A man standing in the bow of a crowded lifeboat raises a scarf to signal a passing steam ship. Between the boat and the distant ship one can discern the sinking remains of another vessel; smudges in the sky seem to suggest smoke billowing from the wreakage. Bold strokes of enamel color emphasize the fury of the waves. On the reverse the mottos are presented simply and emphatically in black transfer.

The two bits of wisdom on the reverse titled "Dr. Frankllin's Maxims" read:
