Even with the wide diversity of Mason's patterns, there are a few that stand out as unlike any other. Instead of focusing on a central motif, this pattern presents an overall field in the center of the plate--literally a field of flowers. Just southeast of center we find a dominant chrysanthemum blossom executed in cobalt and gilt. The rest of the meadow is filled with pastel blossoms hand-painted with a lighter touch. Hovering to the upper left is a whimsical butterfly in outlandish rainbow colors and stylishly curled antennae.

The border is more complex than it first seems. In the curve of the well is a string of circular droplets. Beyond is a wreath of flowers and foliage that reads as an extension of the center field. A narrow outer border re-enforces the dominant green of the palette and finishes the composition with a more formal repeated pattern.

 In his pioneering work on Masons Ironstone, Geoffrey Godden illustrates this pattern, including it among the "Japan" patterns (Godden's Guide to Mason's China and the Ironstone Wares. Antiques Collectors' Club, 1980, p.128).  We still await a publication that identifies specific prototypes, but it is difficult to imagine a Japanese original with as much energy as the Masons brought to their version.

This British take on export wares must have been a really exciting addition to formal  Georgian dining tables.
