Wedgwood creates a sense of importance around the Parthenon horsemen medallions, derived from the Elgin marbles. The dramatic contrast of crisp white sprigging against the black jasper, along with the large size of the medallions and their luxurious settings of beading and acanthus, underscores the esteem in which these subjects were held.
Wedgwood finishes the piece with trophy devices on each side representing music (or harmony) and love. A frieze of grapevine around the top with a second border of acanthus leaf around the bottom unifies the overall decorative plan. Wedgwood's very simple silverplate fitting complements the crisp black and white decoration.
