For this dinner plate, W.H. Grindley and Co. offsets a creamy white ironstone body with an airy Japanesque arrangement in their "Malta" pattern. The border provides the primary decoration, covering the flange with a design of prunus branches dipping over a fan and teardrop edging into the well of the plate. What first appears to be trellis, however, is actually a patchwork of triangular grounds filled with three different diaper patterns. A second heavier border wraps the edge of this piece, creating a woven pattern. The simple circular center motif is a combination of elements from the border.
