A central fan device frames a porthole for old Dobbin to poke his friendly head through. The border consists of a crisp alphabet bound together with a wandering vine. The black transfer on white body is enhanced with ochre and rose enamel highlights.

The "Fan" series continues John Meir's production after Adam's purchase of the Greengates pottery in 1896. Seven different animals are known in this format and three additional variations on the fan motif. Production continued through 1966.
