Some unknown maker has achieved a romantic sense of innocence in the simple hand painted ring of  pink rosebuds and green leaves decorating this cup and saucer.  Complementary bands of pink lustre finish the pieces with a touch of sparkle around the rims while the pearlware glaze creates a purer, warmer white ground. 

By the 1830's industrialization was firmly established in the Staffordshire potteries--think of transfer printing as an example. The simplicity that charms us in hand-enameled pieces like this was calculated to enable decorators to execute pieces quickly and with consistency. The quality that we today associate with folk art is merely, but happily, incidental. Don't fail to note the simple concentric arcs that suggest the petals of the rosebuds.
