A squatty low teapot is adorned with two rows of elaborate classical scrolls. Molded embellishments cover almost the entire surface of the drab-colored stoneware. The glossy glaze catches light reflections on the relief, giving the entire teapot a sort of shimmer (the surface must have been very effective when illuminated by early lighting.) Topping the pot is a detailed figural finial depicting a charmingly attentive spaniel.

The spaniel, pampered lap dog of the pampered classes, fulfills its status in Wedgwood's version, reclining on a plump cushion studded with tiny tassels. The finial appears in stoneware of all types and probably represents Wedgwood's most popular finial form after the sibyl.
