Arab horsemen arrive at an exotic draped tent on David Johnson's brown transfer salad plate. The lush landscape is typical of transferware depictions of faraway lands. In the dramatic border a field of grape clusters is studded with reserves featuring exotic foul.

David Johnson was an enterprising Staffordshire potter who relocated to France. His patterns all reveal their Staffordshire roots. This one is especially reminiscent of Wood's contemporary "Belzoni." (The grapes in the border are almost an exact quotation.)
