The "Cornelian"pattern is a deceptively simple looking arrangement executed in contrasting transfer colors -- here in the rare brown and yellow combination.  The primary focus, executed in brown transfer, is a pair of lovebirds perched on a branch on each side of the pot and lid (with even a single peep at the base of the spout).  A continuous yellow printed band decorated with a braided pattern - edged in brown tatting-like detail -- outlines the undulating shoulder of the pot, neck and collar; the edge of the lid; and even a snippet down the exterior of the handle.  Contrasting brown transfer floral sprigs appear to have lightly dropped onto this border hanging down on the body to frame the lovebird tableau.

Most of the examples of the "Cornelian" pattern which we have seen over the years have been in black and red transfer..  We have only recently seen examples marked with the pattern name -- and we have never seen a piece marked with a maker's name. And, while we are familiar with a landscape pattern with identical forms, those pieces lack identification of the maker as well. Perhaps with time, more clues will emerge to pin down the elusive maker of this delightful pattern.
