A most unusual form for Masons Ironstone! The vase form rises from a broad circular base and bends dramatically inward forming a strong hip angle and terminating in a narrow cylinder collar. The opening suggests a flask, but the squatty round shape is more like a vase.

Mason's familiar "Fence " pattern adapts well to the unique form. The semi-abstract garden scene in tones of orange and blue extends upward from the coral colored fence to flowers and cobalt foliage motifs that reach up to the raised collar rings. The imagery derives from Japanese Imari patterns, but takes on a folk-art like quality in the hands of Staffordshire decorators. The slap-dash energy beloved by Masons fanciers is apparent throughout.

What was the purpose of this curious little vessel? We find nothing similar in our reference books. It is a bit romantic to speculate that the wide flat base reflects an intended ship board function? It may have found a place on some dressing table or even in a traveling toilet kit. Gilt detail continues inside the neck, however, giving no evidence of a stopper. Perhaps it is simply a  posey holder guaranteed not to tip over.
