The Masons Ironstone potters have created something akin to an exotic pagoda in this lidded vase.  Polychrome enamels highlight carefully drawn chinoiserie scenes of daily life against the cobalt ground of the lid and base.  A green ground studded with a stylized chrysanthemum denotes the neck.  Gilt filigree patterns enrich both the cobalt and green areas, while contrasting orange enamel separates the shoulder and elaborate cutout handles.  An unusual gilded knop tops off this almost architectural confection.

Given the absence of marks, we have dated this piece to the 1830's. This reflects our observation of a shift in patterns in the late 1820's.  Patterns bearing the earliest Masons (impressed) marks almost always reflect the direct influence of their roots in oriental export wares.  Patterns bearing the later printed marks reflect an evolving, uniquely English take on these earlier Chinese sources which is evident in this spectacular and wholly original decorative vase.
