Clews' patriotic statement features a classical Roman figure striding toward us, sickle in one hand and a basket of fruit in the other. Behind him, sheaves of wheat are stacked in the newly harvested field while a distant sun is shown rising, blessing the new land.
A solid cobalt ground, embellished with oversize florals and fruit, scrollwork and baskets of flowers, opens at the center to frame Clews' patriotic tableau. A printed border simulating gadroon detail finishes the extreme edge of the dinner plate.

While many patterns developed for the American consumer celebrate military or political aspects of the new nation, "Peace and Plenty"--as the name suggests--focuses on the land and its promise of agricultural bounty. The allegorical figure is a harvest diety, not a god of war. His only weapon is the sickle; his only booty is produce.
