James and Ralph Clews celebrate the young American country in their "Peace and Plenty" pattern. The dinner plate is executed in dark blue transfer printed pearlware.
Clews' patriotic statement features a classical Roman figure striding toward us, sickle in one hand and a basket of fruit in the other. Behind him, sheaves of wheat are stacked in the newly harvested field while a distant sun is shown rising, blessing the new land.
A solid cobalt ground, embellished with oversize florals and fruit, scrollwork and baskets of flowers, opens at the center to frame Clews' patriotic tableau. A printed border simulating gadroon detail finishes the extreme edge of the dinner plate.
