With the "Commerce" pattern, Samuel Alcock summons up the allure of exotic destinations with depictions of Asian harbor activities and scenery. At the center of these salad size plates, two Europeans standing on a quay examine wares being offered by a peddler who kneels before them. Background architectural details establish a far eastern locale, and masts of great sailing ships reflect the expanding global view of nineteenth century consumers.

The pattern is finished with a border of floral clusters placed over a lacey ground of ferns and forget-me-nots. 

Seekers currently offers this plate in two sizes, 8 in. as shown and a slightly smaller 7 inch version with slightly different, complementary scenes (see last photo). Five of each size available, sold separately. 

Generally, we would date these pieces from the mid 1830's through the 1840's. The dates cited above refer to Alcock's years of operation.
