Printed in a juicy blue transfer that approaches flown blue, "June" from Wedgwood's "Months" series suggests a budding young romance as well as the season of farming and gardening. Pausing for a moment, a young lad and lass take a break from the chores at hand to enjoy each other's company.

The alternate title for the series, "Old English" explains the archaic farm costumes, but one also suspects the influence of the popular illustrator Kate Greenaway, who at times has been given credit--erroneously-- for the work of Helen Miles in designing the series.

The crowded profusion of blossoms that forms the border is especially appropriate to the month of June. Perhaps we can imagine these meadow flowers as a sort of hedgerow around the field. 

Trained at the important South Kensington School of  Art, artist,Helen J. A. Miles (fl.1860-1893) designed several series of tiles for Wedgwood, including "A Midsummer Night's Dream," as well as "Months." Both of these well known series were employed on plates as well as tiles--in different color variants and with a variety of borders.
