Machin's graceful  shape of this simply potted porcelain saucer dish perfectly complements this variation on New Hall’s popular “Boy in the Window” pattern. In this patio garden scene, a mother looks on as her child gestures enthusiastically with a spray of berries. An older woman beams down from the window. Decoration starts with a minimal outline transfer which is brought to life with a rainbow of hand applied enamels. The enamel colors include a deep mahogany red, soft coral orange, aqua, blue, a rich amethyst pink, and yellow. In the background, one notes the traditional tall stand which we associate with the earlier porcelain patterns of Worcester. Similar to New Hall, the piece is finished with a hand decorated border of two pinstripe bands and inner order of scallops and drops.

Given the fine, almost plastic quality of the porcelain body, the slightly crude potting underscoring that quality, and the saucer dish shape of this porcelain cake plate, we are dating this piece to the early 19th century. New Hall’s “Boy in The Window” pattern obviously has some influence here, however as one considers the tall stand in the background of this familial scene, Worcester’s earlier use of the motif in similar tableaux also comes to mind.
