Possibly the most endearing piece of Wedgwood we can think of, this well known little bowl features three little pugs with red polka dot ruffs sitting at attention and holding the bowl in place. The reference here of course is to Mr. Punch's loyal companion, Toby. Inside the bowl Mr. Punch, the renowned Victorian character from the satirical magazine of the same name, appears as the "champion." The scrawny pugilist fumbling with his robe is depicted in brown polychrome transfer--doubtless preparing to challenge the purveyors of hypocrisy. The ruff-wearing pug, Toby reappears at his feet.

According to Maureen Batkin in Wedgwood Ceramics 1846-1959: A New Appraisal, (page 104, plate 224), the "Punch" designs were registered in 1878 and include the little bowl as shown above, the "Napier" shape jug, a beer set, a cruet set and a tea set.
