The touch of blue in Wedgwood’s cool white stone body underscores the shimmering multiple values of the lapis blue transfer in this version of the "Water Lily" pattern. The pattern features three species of water lilies, their exotic leaves, rich blooms and tendrils entwined to fill the center of this desert plate right out to the "cut reed" border. The detailed floral depiction reveals the pattern's derivation from botanical illustrations.

While it is a simplified version of Wedgwood's polychrome and gilded "Water Lily" pattern,Robin Reilly in his two volume Wedgwood calls blue "Water Lily," "one of the most successful blue transfer patterns of the period." We second Mr. Reilly’s observation.
