The polychrome version of Minton's "Faisan" (Pheasant) pattern lavishes an unusually full palette of pastel enamels over a strong graphic pattern in black. The pheasant of the title is framed in a circular reserve, juxtaposed with a dramatically dark vertical panel featuring iris. The two motifs float over a delicately colored flowering branch. A Chinese fret border, highlighted in pink, is divided by six prunus branch reserves in yellow, green and blue.

We generally find the Minton aesthetic "Faisan" pattern in black or brown transfer on an ivory body. The boldness of these pieces contrasts strongly with the pastel softness of this version. The whole point of polychromy, after all, was to produce a range of marketable variations from a single transfer design.
