Despite its asymmetrical Japanese-inspired composition, the Ashworth brothers seem to try everything in their power to transform the brown transfer "Melrose" pattern into a little bit of English countryside. The songbirds, old roses, pigeons, and even the scrollwork trim looks to European sources rather than the exotic East.

Ashworth was not the only manufacturer working hard to put the Anglo into Anglo-Japanesque. Wedgwood, in the "Edinburgh" pattern also takes an aesthetic transfer format and proceeds to westernize it with a variety of familiar details.
