A hearty gentleman--perhaps a Scotsman--strides over snow covered hills in a scene chosen by Adams to represent winter for the "Seasons" pattern red transfer cup and saucer. As he braves the cold he takes comfort in his pipe and in the presence of his frisky dog. The landscape features a snowy mountain peak, cottages, and an impressive baronial hall. The scene from the center of the saucer is adapted for the side and interior of the handleless cup.
The red ground of the border is interrupted by a meandering ribbon that divides floral reserves from allegorical figures representing the four seasons--each labeled so that there is no mistaking their significance.
