In this brown transfer version of Wedgwood's "Banquet" pattern, artist Thomas Allen provides images concerning the origins of everyday food stuffs. Here a pot of soup is prepared over an open fire and a naked child squats down to receive a taste. The vignette is surrounded by a motto offering this slightly scolding advice: "Enough:  health. More: disease."

The border consists of panels framed in scroll work featuring animals in the dark ground panels and playful putti in alternating light ground reserves.

Thomas Allen’s design for the Wedgwood Banquet series presents an interesting combination of classical European elements--the costumes, the putti and scrollwork sections--and Japanese inspired design--the depiction of fish, the juxtaposed geometries of the composition. The result uniquely fits the label, "Anglo-japanesque."
