What was intended to commemorate one of the most curious events of the romantic movement in Britain--Lord Eglinton's medieval inspired tournament--remains today one of the most eloquent souvenirs of the gothic revival movement.
William Ridgway's green molded stoneware jug features a relief frieze which cleverly reveals the tournament scene as the jug is rotated. In the relief, two mounted knights, lances extended, charge full tilt at each other from opposite sides. Their lance tips cross before a decorated marquee, pitched right below the spout. Attending knights bearing spare lances flank the handle. Bands of gothic tracery fill most of the remaining surface, including pointed arches terminated by leopard heads at the rim and a band of stylized grape vine around the hip. Additional gothic detail ornaments the proudly peaked handle.
