T. &  R. Boote's "Summertime" pattern combines soft brown transfer with a slightly off-white ironstone body to create a fresh, crisp effect. The simple pattern effectively evokes summer with a butterfly hovering about a couple of grassy sprays. The pattern is framed with a prominent ornamental chain pattern along the edge. This platter features a distinctive scallop detail around the edge. 

Boote's "Summertime" demonstrates how the Japanesque patterns of the late nineteenth century transformed into twentieth century tableware.   We have to believe that anyone who paid any attention at all to what went on  the everyday dinner tables of post WWII America must remember patterns ranging from a spray of wheat to a cluster of magnolia or apple blossoms floating on an otherwise open ground.  I especially remember one Christmas when one of our friend's mothers was presented with an entire service  decorated with a single long stem pink rose casually laid near one section of the rim of each piece (courtesy, ironically of the Japanese).
