Hollinshead and Kirkham have given us a wonderfully raucous statement in this large ivory body aesthetic pattern wash jug. The brown transfer pattern is executed with such scale and sense of bravado that we feel it must have been used only on toilet pieces. Large scale florals set off an array of oriental treasures, including an exotic shape pot, an unfurling scroll, a fan, and even a bat which seems to materialize from one of the blossoms. Colors include vibrant pinks, green, teal, blue and ochre. The ochre enamel is even carried over to the tree bark handle.

Hollinshead and Kirkham is a name familiar to no one, possibly because of the cryptic use of initials only in their japanesque mark. We find nothing but a listing in our references, however if the bravado of this piece is any indication, they certainly understood the obsession for Japanism so prevalent at the time.
