Despite the employment of delicate oval medallions, Wedgwood's "Monopodia" vase design is one in which architectural elements, not pictorial reliefs, make the dominant impression.

The gently flaring pot is divided into sections with simple horizontal molded bands. At right angles to these, four vertical reeded monopodia define square sections surrounding the piece, not unlike the vertical elements in a paneled room. The monopodia are finished with a traditional paw foot and lion ring mask top. Floral garlands suspended between each mask frame a petite classical medallion. A band of ribbon entwined with ivy backs the masks creating a horizontal frieze, while a minute ribbon looped string follows the molded body detail near the paw feet finishing this architectural scheme. Acanthus detail trims both the rim and foot of the piece.

Monopodia, columns topped by a mask and terminated at the bottom by a single foot, most often appear as legs or supports. Wedgwood adapts the device to its own decorative needs by attaching it to the wall of the vessel in the manner of a pilaster. The use of the monopodia design in a number of different sizes and colors attests to the success of this architectural fantasy.
