A series of alternating floral clusters seem to have alighted on a frame of fine grillwork around the border of Wood's exotic "Venetian Scenery" pattern.  Wood creates a sense of delicacy and opulence in this black transfer pattern by extending the filigree grillwork from the edge, across the flange, and down into the well of these platters.  

In the center scene, a fantasy barge conveys its passengers across a lagoon.  They may have just left the nearby church--a cross between Italian baroque and Chinese pagoda style--which shares the foreground. Two or three additional islands with lush vegetation and additional exotic structures recede across the lagoon toward a horizon dotted with distant mountains.

"Celtic China" was a tradename used by Wood and a few other potters indicating that some elements of his clay formula came from Wales. 

Seekers currently offers a slightly smaller black transfer platter in "Venetian Scenery." Subtle differences in the center scene make it a pleasing, complimentary companion.  We also have an additional dinner plate and six salad plates.
