A tiny jasperware cylinder, just over an inch tall, is given three strap handles of amazing delicacy to create this miniature loving cup.  Borders are eliminated, allowing maximum surface space for three classical sprigs against Wedgwood's dark blue jasper dip ground. The result testifies to Wedgwood's ability to create dignity in even the most diminutive and whimsical objects.

The three handled loving cup or tyg is a traditional folk form--handy for passing around a communal draught of ale. The revived form was made popular in the latter part of the nineteenth century by Doulton and other potters. The small size of this example demonstrates that by this era the appeal of the form was that of a decorative curio.
