This Enoch Wood luncheon size plate depicts Kentucky's venerable Transylvania University ,founded in 1780. As with many American transfer views, the potter has chosen one of the republic's early institutions as an appeal to the American consumer's pride.
The view centers on a handsome three story federal style building with cupola which was built in 1818. The surrounding grounds suggest an idyllic European park setting. A strolling couple in the foreground helps set the mood.
Six clusters of large shells, nestled among foliage suggestive of seaweed constitute the main features of the border. (Perhaps Enoch was unaware of how far Inland Lexington really is.) In contrast to the craggy "Irregular Shell Border Series" this group of subjects is designated "Shell Border Circular Center." The edge of the plate is finished with a narrow bead-like ring.
