Square framed Asian scenes, juxtaposed on top of each other, provide the primary decoration for the Masons Ironstone "Double Landscape" pattern. A cobalt ground provides deep contrast with the rich ochre enamel filigree which swirls around the landscape vignettes. The same ochre tone brightens the color palette when used for the finned body of the scaly--but smiling --serpent handle.
The border employed for "Double Landscape" plates is here widened to adorn the entire neck of the jug with contrasting cobalt and brilliant scarlet panels. Gem-like touches of peach, pale yellow and green enamel finish the composition. Jugs in this pattern receive an extra border of green oriental pattern and red floral reserves around the inside rim.
While the faceted baluster shape of the jug is not one of the commonly used Mason's shapes, in our experience it is the shape most often associated with this pattern.
