This modest, footed grape leaf dish is an example of eighteenth century salt glaze tableware. While the potter remains unknown, these are generally assumed to be of Staffordshire origin.
Traditionally called a pickle dish, these would have been used to serve the preserved or candied fruits which were part of the dessert course of a meal. These relatively flat, leaf shape dishes were made in a number of variations with relief-molded designs generally focused on themes from nature, such as shells or foliage. In this example, an additional flowering plant is depicted over the molded leaf detail. The piece is finished with three petal-form molded feet and, continuing the adherence to nature, a grape vine twig for the handle.
