The "Canova" pattern is a great example of the transition of Neoclassicism into Romanticism. In this dreamy garden scene, the familiar "Canova" urn stands on a garden promontory overlooking a lagoon where a pleasure craft lazily plies the waters. A blue ground border of neoclassical scenic reserves, alternating with floral groups, extends down into the well of the plate to frame the center scene. The scalloped edge of the plate is echoed in the printed sawtooth and pendant design finishing the border around the center scene.
