The primary focus of "Maitland" is the pastoral vignette depicted at the base of the pattern.  In the scene, a lone fisherman passes the time on some quiet inland  waterway.  The scene is captured in a rectangular rustic twig frame laid over a circular willow pattern field.   As one glances at the scene, one can not help but wish one had the time to be walking on the path beside the riverbank.  This artistic arrangement is nestled in a tangle of wild roses and flowering vine which curls up around the flange pointing toward another spray placed diagonally toward the top of the plate.   

The "Maitland" pattern is listed and illustrated in  Adams Ceramics, Staffordshire Potters and Pots, 1779-1998  by David Furniss, J. Richard Wagner and Judith Wagner (Schiffer Publishing Ltd., Aglen, Pa; 1999). 

The listing includes a factory drawing of a chamber set -- pitcher and bowl attributing it to Adams & Co., Tunstall, 1892 to 1917.  This date range corresponds to William Adams reorganization after the partnership of William and Thomas Adams ended.  We speculate the pattern could date back to the 1870's or 1880's, having been acquired by the Adams organization after an earlier potter went out of business.
