A square curlique framed vignette features a lone Gypsy's encampment--his wagon rests horseless, his kettle is suspended over his fire, an outsider looking at a distant church. Around the rim, a white vine fretwork-blue ground border frames the scene.

Following the 18th century theories of Rousseau, the Gypsy was viewed with some admiration as a being better in tune with nature and the tides of creation. Here, the juxtaposition of the Gypsy and the distant church is thought provoking.
