A slightly concave flange is used to great advantage in this oversisze dinner plate. The combination of a colored ground lightened by a fine network of vines contrasting with large clusters of roses and hibiscus crreates a lush, romantic frame for the center scenes of Phillips' "Polish Views". In the center, a weeping man is comforted by his female companion in a park-like setting surrounding a large onion domed structure. In the background, a horseman gallops out from the palace, his headgear identifying him as a Polish national.

The Seekers Journal includes a featured item on Phillips "Polish Views" and the "Tear for Poland" scene. We speculate that the scene may relate to a verse of the Polish national hymn which speaks of an old man sitting with his daughter as they listen to the distant drum of their countrymen coming to liberate Poland.
