Some unknown potter has looked to recent scientific finds and the talk of society centering on the field of archaeology for this blue transfer pattern of antique figures. In case any do not fathom the connection he has further named the pattern “Grecian” for his very modern shape short waisted handless cup and saucer. In keeping with the antique, he has trimmed the top edge of his procession of goddesses, muses and sprites with a stylized wave pattern probably based on some antique border fragment while the antique group in the center is framed in a ring of anthemion – definitely of classical origins. The blue transfer pattern uses a stipple printed ground while the figures themselves are left white underscoring the connection to recently discovered antique sculptural figures and friezes.
