Thomas Cole's view of the Catskill Mountain House is featured on William Adams and Sons dinner plate in their series of American scenic views. In this example, the Adams have executed the pattern in red transfer.
The subject of the view, the Catskill Mountain House is depicted in the wooded landscape of a high, distant mountaintop plateau The Adams have created some sense of both distance and grandeur by including a small group of people, possibly early American tourists in the lower foreground of the scene. While three seem to be engaged in conversation, a fourth sits a bit farther back watching the interchange while a fifth, even farther back heads into the dense woodland. While the scene is framed by a delicate fillet around the center of the plate, the flange is decorated with a lush combination of floral groups alternating with shell motif devices. (In fact, the shell motif is the immediate key to identifying the Adams series). The border decoration finishes with a tight string of beading contrasting with the white scalloped edge of the plate.
