The "Monopodia" vase represents one of Wedgwood's most architectural designs as well as one of the most elegant. Four fluted columns are topped by a lion's head mask and terminated below by a substantial paw. The horizontal band (ribbon and ivy) at the top of the columns approximates the role of a frieze in a classical structure and the overhanging rim, decorated with acanthus, suggests a cornice. Heavily detailed floral swags connect the columns and provide a visual cradle for small oval medallions bearing delicate classical reliefs. In a touch that adds distinction--and rarity--to this example, without disrupting its dignified elegance, the medallions are executed lilac and white jasper, in contrast to the light blue ground.

"Monopodia" are columns terminated at the top by an animal mask (frequently a lion) and at the bottom by a single paw or foot (the mono-pod). A legacy of ancient cultures, they have been used by architects and designers ever since, frequently appearing as furniture legs or as supports for some vessel.
