Bi-color printing offered transferware potters a number of different design options such as the familiar border-versus-center contrast or the inclusion of color highlights within a printed image. Ridgway's "Etruscan Festoon" pattern represents a third strategy--the overlay of a contrasting layer of ornament over a printed ground.

The graceful shape of Ridgway's breakfast cup and saucer alone creates a sense of elegance.  However, Ridgway's "Etruscan Festoon" pattern carries this sense of elegance even further.   Swags of floral garland in brown divide and accent a monochromatic pink field of floral nosegays against a solid background. The result is a lush combination of romanticism with light suggestions of a more formal classicism--appropriate even for the stylish breakfast table. 

Ridgway's inviting oversize cup and saucer is quite a rare example. We have only owned three individual breakfast cups and saucers prior to acquiring these.
