The rounded profile of this little basalt teapot is given added gravitas by the engine turning which circles the body and the classical sibyl figure perched on top. However any solemnity is relieved by the sprightly jolt of its arched handle and the upsweep of the "parapet"--a terrifically arcane sounding term that refers to the sort of upraised collar surrounding the lid.
From our photos, one would never guess at the petite size of this piece except for the U.S. quarter included for reference and possibly by the extended spout - out of proportion with the rest of the body.
