Concentric transfer printed bands of soft violet stylized lotus and golden brown fretwork fully cover the shallow angled rim of this coupe shape plate creating a frame for the soft center study.  The center decoration is a delicate floral and fruit study transfer printed in soft violet with raised gilt blossoms and fruit colored a soft orange. 

We describe this size plate as a luncheon plate in order to consistently indicate the size.  However we feel that given the delicacy of the coupe shape blank and decoration, this plate had a special use for either a formal tea or dessert.  It may have been used to present tea sandwiches, petit fours or some other delicate offering.     

Brownfield demonstrates a very refined understanding of Japanism. The carefully designed border creates a fret-like frame contrasting with the loose delicacy of the center study.  In addition, the surprising soft pastel palette creates a sense of elegance which we associate with the more sophisticated interiors of artists such as Tiffany and Associates.
